Each season since 1983, a limited number
of young people take the challenge to live a week totally emersed in horse
culture, meeting new friends, learning to ride well, and exploring a unique
internationally known wilderness region adjacent the Ranch. All senses
are enlisted to experience the sights, scents, sounds, cool waters,
flora and fauna that is Riding Mountain
National Park. "If you’d like to experience the crunch of fallen twigs
under your horse’s rythmic hoof beats, and you’d enjoy seeing technicolour
sunsets through forested horizons, and hear the yip and howl of coyotes
in stereo, feel the crackle of a campfire generating radiant heat, then
this may be your year to explore the wilderness at "Adventurer Youth Horse
Camp."
Trailhead Ranch hosts a session in July
for ages 10-14, and a new Leadership Session this year for ages 15-18.
Each person is assigned one of our horses to groom,
and ride for the week. We ride over all types of natural terrain, and establish
a true horse and rider bond with the help of experienced leadership and
individualized instruction. Ranch owner Anne
Schuster co-ordinates the session each year, with a combination of
flexibility for recreational fun, and a careful balance of safety ethics,
a solid horsemanship program, and environmental awareness of the Park.
Animal tracking, packing and survival training, and wildlife watching are
part of the activities
Summer sessions are non-denominational
and stress pro-active socialization. A limit of 12 co-ed riders allow
for small group dynamics, daily personalized horsemanship clinics, adventure
tours, housekeeping, evening bonfires and sharing circles. The art
of storytelling is revived as everyone is encouraged to participate with
their share. |
